Nature - Virtual Serengeti
This file contains configuration requirements, installation instructions, and
tips to help you enjoy the CD-ROM.
Please note that this CD-ROM will only run on Windows 95/98 machines. It will
not run on Windows 3.1.
Your computer needs to meet the following minimum
specifications to run the program properly:
* 133 MHz Pentium or faster processor
* Microsoft Windows 95/98 operating system
* 16 MB of RAM
* 640 x 480 display capable of displaying thousands of colors (16-bit)
* 6X CD-ROM drive or faster
* Windows compatible sound card
* External computer speakers
* 10 MB Free Hard Drive space
This CD ROM requires QuickTime 3.0.2 software to run. The installer should take
care of this for you. If you get a message that you need to install Quicktime,
you can install the software yourself from the QTINSTAL directory on the CD-ROM.
The presentation also requires QuickTimeVR components, which should
be installed automatically.
If you have any difficulty installing QuickTime, please visit the Apple
QuickTime site on-line at: http://quicktime.apple.com.
INSTALLATION
If you have already installed the program and wish to install to a different
location, you should run the Uninstaller first to remove the program. To do
this, from the Start Menu click on the item "Uninstall Virtual Serengeti" in
the "Nature" folder.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
General Issues:
If you are experiencing any kind of performance problems with audio or graphics,
you should first make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your sound
and display card. You need to contact the manufacturer of these devices to get
the latest drivers.
Picture:
The program runs best when your monitor is set to display in thousands of colors
(16-bit). If your system is set to display millions of colors, we strongly recommend
that you reset your display to thousands of colors to improve performance.
Changing your display
To open up the Display control panel, right-click on the Windows 95
desktop, and select "Properties" from the menu. In the Display control panel
select the Settings tab, and change your Color Palette option to "thousands of
colors (16-bit)". You may need to restart your computer for the change to take effect.
Sound:
If you are not getting sound from your speakers or headphones, check the
following: Are all cables properly connected? This product should produce audio
through your sound card. Make sure that the cables from your speakers or
headphones are connected to your sound card, that the speakers have power, and
that the volume is turned on.
You can adjust the volume of the game using the keyboard. First, click anywhere
outside of the exploration viewing area. Then use the number keys 0-9 to adjust
the sound. You can also try navigating to the Field Guide or Science Journal sections
before attempting to change the sound. Note: Do not use the keypad numbers.
Check that your sound card is properly configured for Windows and that the right
sound drivers are installed. To test for sound, double-click on the "Sound"
icon in your Windows Control Panel. Select a sound file, and then press the
"Test" button. You should hear a sound. If not, your sound card is not properly
set up. Refer to your sound card user's manual for instructions on proper
configuration and installation.
If your sound is scratchy or unclear - check to make sure that the cable that
connects your speakers to your computer is plugged into the correct jack. If
you have a SoundBlaster or SoundBlaster compatible sound card and your speakers
are powered (i.e. you need to plug them in), then you should plug the speakers
into the "Line Out" jack on the sound card -- not the "Speaker Out" jack. The
"Speaker Out" jack is only for non-powered speakers.
Memory
If you are getting an error message telling you that youÆre out of memory when
attempting to view launch your web browser from the computer in the Camp Mara tent,
if the system crashes a lot, or if performance is sluggish, your memory
resources are probably stretched to capacity. Try closing all other applications before
starting this program. If the problem persists, you may need to add additional
memory to your system in order to use this CD-ROM.
